Banfi Poggio alle Mura Brunello di Montalcino

A cru of select vineyards immediately surrounding the medieval Castello Banfi, historically known as Poggio alle Mura (the walled hilltop), in the southern part of Montalcino. Fermented in stainless steel with traditional maceration. Aged for a minimum of four years, including at least 24 months in oak (90% in French barriques and 10% in Slavonian casks) and 24 months bottle aging before release. A Brunello born in the estate vineyards that the zonation studies, which started in 1980, identified as the most suitable for Sangiovese. Elegant and balanced Brunello, with a good persistence, complex and sweet aromas and with an important but soft structure and a nice final acidity.

Full of freshness and bright youthful fruits, the 2017 vintage brings an elegance and class to the wines. Aromatic blackberries and raspberries with freshness and balance, the wine has a round central core of red fruit that gives way to a complex mid-palate full of cassis, dark cherry, spice and vanilla. While offering immense pleasure in its youth, the 2017 Woodcutter’s - Shiraz will certainly develop into an impressive wine with a few more years in the cellar. Aromas were good, but shy apricot, coconut, and hazel nut. Medium-bodied, good acidity, smooth/sleek texture, and dynamic flavors of tropical fruit, primarily pineapple with stone fruit were boldly intriguing; a bit unusual was the Necco Wafer vibe going on here (see: The Fun of Smelling). Finished long on wet stone notes and hints of cumquat, ginger, and coconut with a well integrated 12.5% alcohol. Though luscious, this wine was deceptively dry, and paired perfectly with my Yellow-fin tuna salad. Varietals were 50% Sauvignon Blanc and 50% Sémillon.
