Mähler-Besse Masterclass

Seven Bordeaux wines to sample in one sitting!

I was again given the privilege to host a masterclass for wines from Mähler-Besse and without hesitation I said yes! Invitations were sent out to our regular customers and of course some new faces for those who won their seats.

The master class was conducted by Ms Elise Ville,the business development manager and Ms Marlene Darjour,the area export manager of Mahler-Besse whom arrived just hours before the event. They delighted us with stories and, more importantly, explaining the rich taste and nuances of their range of wines to a full house.

And to welcome our French guests I decided to try my hands at liver and olive pate to go with the wines. “I’m French and I don’t even know how to make them!” was their respond and it went so well with the wines! All food, except for the cheese platter & the bread, were proudly homemade.

Mähler-Besse has great history which began in 1892, when Fréderik Mähler, aged 20, from the Netherlands decided to settle in Bordeaux to build the fine wine and spirits business. In 1905, he married Marguerite Besse. Together they opened up to Northern Europe, the Netherlands Antilles, Russia and Canada and thus gave their company an international dimension by. In 1928, his son Henry started to assist him.

Together, they bought the Château Cheval Noir in Saint Emilion in 1937 and became a co-owner of Château Palmer in Margaux in 1938. In the aftermath of the Second World War, Frederik bequeathed the conduct of the company to his son Henry. For over 30 years, the company prospered and become Consul of the Netherlands in Bordeaux.

Moving onwards from our little history lesson, here are some notes of the wines featured.

Cheval Noir Blanc 2017

Very refreshing with notes of lime. This Sauvignon blanc was made in cold maceration and processed using non-fermented matter at the bottom of the Vat that confers fullness and smoothness on tasting which made it a very suitable to wine to start with.

Cheval Noir 2016

A 100% Merlot which gives notes of spices & red berries. Well structured with a good balance between the grapes & tannins. A very nice wine to enjoy during lunch!

Chateau La Couronne 2015

I love this Saint-Emilon! 60% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Cabernet Franc. It has a very deep red colour produced in French Oak barrel for 12 months. The first nose I got was vanilla and this definitely was a crowd pleaser with its full bodied and long-lasting taste. Would go really well with a good piece of steak.

Chateau Larrieu Terrefort 2015

This Margaux was aged for 12 months in barrels. The makers take pride in how the selections were done by sorting the grapes on the table. Very supple on the palate with red berries nose. Overall, it’s very easy to drink.

Chateau Picard 2015

85% Cabernet Sauvignon and 15% Merlot, this Cru Bourgeois was left in maceration after fermentation for 15 to 20 days for extraction of colour, aroma and tannins. It was then aged in barrels out of beams for 12 to 18 months. Crimson in colour with hints of smokiness and spices. Goes very well with matured cheese.

Chateau Feytit Lagrave 2014

Pomeral with 80% Merlot and 20% Cabernet Franc give this label its roundness, fruits & body that makes it really yummy! Very chocolaty and the wines spend 15 months in new French oak barrels. One of the favourites among our crowd. I definitely love this one!

Chateau Cheval Noir 2012

A very, very yummy magnum! This 100% Merlot was processed in French oak barrels with an aging potential of 10 years! Very beautiful garnet red coloured, deep and full-bodied wine with great tannins. This definitely is our typical ‘Kau Kau’ wine. Great to go with beef or duck.

Everyone had a wonderful time. I’m mostly happy that my friends came to support, with a couple coming all the way from Muar! And at the end of the evening, new friendships were forged and some even stayed till closing time! What a blast!

Can’t wait for our next tasting session! We now turn our attention from the Western Wines to the East this time : Sake! I love it! Stay tuned for the tickets.
